Episode 93 - Tim Powers Interview

Tim Powers is my favorite author. There, I said it. Now that the cat’s out of the bag, let’s talk about this episode. Tim is the author of many incredible novels, such as - On Stranger Tides, The Anubis Gates, The Stress Of Her Regard, Expiration Date and Alternate Routes. Twisted histories? Sort of. More like a fictional unveiling of the secrets behind historical figures and events. Why did Blackbeard drink burning rum mixed with gunpowder? Why did Thomas Edison throw firecrackers at his terrified children? Who wad Spring-Heeled Jack, really? Read Tim’s books and you’ll find out the answers to these questions and many, many more. I might add, you’ll be VERY entertained and enthralled, too, when reading the words of Tim Powers. We talk about UFO’s, Tim’s writing process (which is sometimes a little rough), freeways in Los Angeles and why most of the main characters, or, heroes, in Tim’s books get run so ragged. Hint - I’m calling it the “Diehard Effect” from now on.

Episode 92 - Paranormal Trivia Challenge

Welcome to the very first I Wanna Party With Bob Trivia Challenge of 2021! The subject of this terrifying trivia is the paranormal, haunted places and haunted/cursed objects, to be specific. Here’s a couple of examples - Where did the Dead Milkmen film part of the music video for “Punk Rock Girl”, that is also a very haunted former prison? What does the name of the popular slumber party distraction, Ouija, mean? There’s even a question about a fictional cursed or haunted doll from the OG Twilight Zone series! This one is not to be missed, mostly because of the cast of ghoulishly great paranormal professionals that have assembled to answer the questions. Let me introduce them! Amanda Paulson of the Pretty F’n Spooky Blog & YouTube Channel, Cherise Williams, the terrific tarot reading investigator and YouTube Channel host, Ivy and Hannah of The Ghoul’s Trip Blog and finally, Josh and Tamara of The Hexfiles Podcast. These good people are all amazing investigators, practitioners of witchcraft, crazy about cryptids and the finest folks you’ll find in a haunted house, or anywhere, really. The musical selections of the episode are “Haunted Town” by Nightbirds and a cover of best Misfits song written about me, “Attitude”. Here are links to the bands and the contestants various ventures!

Episode 91 - Haunted Dolls

What is it about haunted and possibly paranormal dolls that is just so damn terrifying? The thought that an inanimate and cuddly object could be the source of your demise? Is it that dolls are a trusted and comforting presence from our childhood, so when they get weird, it’s like a personal betrayal? Or is it just that dolls in general are creepy because of the “Uncanny Valley” and they all might as well be haunted, they’re so damn creepy anyway? Maybe you won’t find the answers to those questions in this episode. But what you WILL find are the stories of two very famous haunted dolls, Annabelle and Robert. Plus, the newest addition to this trio of terrible toys, Betty the doll. Betty has some history on the Bobcast (Check out the “Ghost Stories Part 3 episode), so this is a sort of follow-up episode on the Betty front. Amanda Paulson and Cherise Williams first investigated Betty, now she’s in the hands of the good folks at The Hexfiles Podcast. Josh and Tamara of Hexfiles join me to talk about their experiences with Betty in this episode and they have some surprising and spooky tales to tell. Also in this episode is a new feature, a segment of the Bobcast titled “Mysterious Musings With Ivy Boyd”. Ivy starts the episode out in style with some information and theories relating to haunted dolls. The music of the episode is fittingly and fearfuly perfect, with Deadbolt, Houseghost and Devil Doll forming the soundtrack for these stories of sometimes deadly, sometimes dreadful dolls. Episode 89 - Songs! Music! It's The Top 20 Of 2020

2020 was a year seemingly concieved in a Stephen King novel. Fascist leadership in the USA, a worldwide pandemic, economic disaster after disaster, did I miss anything? Well, at least the music of the Bobcast was great? Here is my ode to the songs that made 2020 a little more bearable for me and hopefully, you. Episode 88 - Best Of 2020

A “Year In Review” for a year like 2020 was a rough thing to sort out. 2020 sucked. No denying that, right? Well, at least on the Bobcast, 2020 was a great year. Starting out with the conclusion of the Danzig Trilogy and ending with the Paul Tremblay interview, mix in a ton of incredible songs by incredible bands, I can’t complain about 2020 from the podcast point of view. Here’s what you’re getting in this fun-filled episode - Excerpts from the Danzig Series conclusion, the Joe Wood interview, the James Baldwin episode, the Katie Burr interview and the Paul Tremblay interview. A ghost story by Gared O’Donnell of Planes Mistaken For Stars from the very first Bobcast “Ghost Stories” episode. Songs by Lost Avenue, Sarchasm, Le Saboteur, The Bollweevils, Dillinger Four, Get Married and The Hybrids. Sense Field closes this “Best Of…” episode out with a cover of the song “Happy Christmas (War Is Over”. Happy New Year and here’s to a MUCH better year in 2021.

Episode 86 - Ghost Stories Volume III

Gather ‘round the Yule Log, it’s time for some chilling tales of haunted horrors! Ghost Stories Volume III has arrived under the Bobcast tree, just in time for Xmas. Ivy Boyd of the Creepin’ It Real podcast and Ghoul’s Trip blog starts things off with some creepy Christmas ghost stories. Maria of Hollywood Exhumed tells a tale of a departed Uncle who likes to stop by unannounced, even after his passing. Darrin Pfieffer (formerly) of Goldfinger and (currently of) The Dangerous Darrin Show describes what a former girlfriend experienced at a haunted music venue in Buffalo, NY - which was also one of Al Capone’s former “haunts”. Ceasar stays one unforgettable night in the famously phantasmal Jerome Grand Hotel. CJ Frederick of Dead Bars fame tells a chillingly familiar story from the wilds of Jeresey City. And maybe CJ needs a visit from the Ghost Of Xmas Future, ya know, to straighten him out a little. Finally, Amanda of the Pretty F’n Spooky blog and YouTube channel, along with Cherise Williams, talk about their experiences with a VERY haunted doll named Betty. Yikes. The songs of the episode tie everything together, very fitting and very awesome - Parasites, Tsunami Bomb, Night Birds and Pulley help summon the spirits for this one, wherever they’re at. Brought to you by the fine folks of Discount Cemetery. Turn up the Christmas lights for this one, festive frights await! Check out the links below!

Episode 85 - Paul Tremblay Interview

Paul Tremblay is the author of several novels, such as “A Head Full Of Ghosts”, “Disappearance At Devil’s Rock”, “The Cabin At The End Of The World” and “Survivor Song”. One short story collection, “Growing Things” belongs on this list, as well. All thought provoking, some ambiguous, all lovely (and sometimes heartbreaking), some straight forward and tidily resolved. No mater what, I always walk away from a novel or story written by Paul Tremblay satisfied and yet yearning for more. Questions, though. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have any questions after reading the stories of Paul Tremblay. So, here we are! This episode features an interview with Paul Tremblay, plus three songs by some of the bands that he loves. A Husker Du cover performed by Big Drill Car, plus two songs by those Welsh masters of melodic mayhem, Future Of The Left. Samples of the questions I asked one of my favorite authors of recent years? Where do you find the best fried clams in the Boston area? (Hint, they’re not IN Boston proper, trick question.) Who would you choose, from a roster of Boston bands? The Pixies or The Cars? Last one, last sample question - do you, Mr. Tremblay, believe in ghosts? Listen for the answers to those questions, plus the sounds of some of Paul Tremblay’s favorite bands. Check out the links below!

Episode 84 - HP Lovecraft Was A Proud Boy

HP Lovecraft was undoubtedly one of 20th century fiction’s greatest writers. He invented horror fiction as we know it today, I believe. Cosmic, undulating, gasping for breath tales of terror that will keep the bravest soul awake at night. Lovecraft was also an unabashed racist, xenophobe and weird nationalist. This episode covers the history of HP Lovecraft, from birth to death, plus the incredibly lousy views he held on race, immigrants and white power/nationalist nonsense. HP Lovecraft was the early 20th century version of a “proud boy”. Timely, I know. Music of the episode by The Darkest Of The Hillside Thickets, the world’s greatest Lovecraft-inspired band.

Episode 83 - 2020 Thanksgiving Special

2020 has been garbage. Poop. Awful and filled with daily horrors. As we near the end of 2020, things are starting to look up a little bit, right? Biden won the US Presidency, a vaccine is coming for covid 19 and it is finally, finally the holidays. We made it. Thanksgiving is traditionally the start of the “holiday season”, though Halloween starts the festivities as far as I’m concerned. Can we just have Halloween once a month? I digress. This episode is a recipe for what makes up a typical Bobcast. An amazing ghost/paranormal encounter-type story from Ivy of the Ghoul’s Trip Blog and Creepin’ It Real podcast, a round of San Diego music trivia with the fine fellows of the Palapalooza podcast and lastly, a tale of revenge against the person that might be the worst person in music today - Morrissey. Worst person, best songs? Such a love/hate thing with me and Morrissey. A new feature to the Bobcast is in this one, Crusty’s Corner, a sort of Canadian connection that is so, so rad. Music of the episode provided by Houseghost, Hiding From Humans and Fun People. Grab a chair at the kid’s table with me, scoop up some stuffing and mashed potatoes and prepare for a FOOD FIGHT THANKSGIVING STYLE, via your favorite Bobcast. Welcome to the Sad Girlz Club Bobcast episode! This one has been in the works for a long, long time, as we were initially supposed to talk back in April of 2020 during La Escalera Fest - which was cancelled due to covid. Well, here we are and let me say, this one was worth the wait. Shelby, Eric and I talked recently, on the evening of Biden’s victory over the current shitbag in the White House. Don’t worry, I didn’t start celebrating until AFTER the interview started. This is a family Bobcast, after all. What you’ll get in this most un-sad episode is an interview with Shelby and Eric, plus four Sad Girlz Club songs! We talk politcs, Sacramento, who would be Scooby Doo and who would be Shaggy and more! The Sad Girlz Club songs in order of appearance are - Back Around, Pedestal, Lonely Nights and Ex-Men. Episode 81 - Haunted Arkansas

Let’s go to Northern Arkansas! I bet you don’t hear that very often, do you? Well. The Northern regions of Arkansas, especially the Northwest and North Central regions, are gorgeous. Green, mountain-y, rivers, lakes, outdoor activities to the end of time. What lurks INSIDE of Northern Arkansas, certain places that are located in Northern Arkansas? Ghosts. Spirits. Phantasms galore. This part of the country is so goshdanged haunted, it’s ridiculous. We’ll visit Cotter Bridge, with a little descriptive history and a completely made-up short story by yours truly. The ghosts around Cotter Bridge are real, ohhh yes they are. Next is Mountain Village 1890, located in Bull Shoals of North Central Arkansas. Colonel Jordan of the Confederate Loser Association of 1865 and his former home are the subject of this segment, featuring my personal experiences with him. Finally, we make a stop at the Crescent Hotel of lovely Eureka Springs, the most haunted hotel in the USA. Ghosts in the basement? THE MORGUE? Indeed. Here we go, let’s get HAUNTED. Music of the episode provided by those Minstrels of the Macabre, Murder By Death. So perfect. Here are some links and some legal stuff.

This one utilizes a couple of European fiddle settings from Quantum Ra. It's somewhat inspired by the music from an area in Northrend of World of Warcraft. There's a very relaxing duet of rustic fiddles that plays in the background in that area, so I wanted to play around with those sounds and this is what I came up with.

Let me know what you think. :)

What do you think of when Canada pops into your head? Molson Canadian? Hockey? Snow? Bob and Doug McKenzie? Poutine? Yeah, yeah, I think of all those things, plus Dudley Do-Right. Mounties, eh? MOSTLY, I think of Valerie Knox and her trifecta of incredible bands. Black Cat Attack. The Anti-Queens. The Hybrids (a Misfits cover band YES!!!!). Holy maple leaves, Valerie is one of the greatest things to ever happen to rock n’ roll. Her bands are absolutely amazing, catchy, they’ve got all the hooks in all the right iceholes. Episode 79 - I Love The Fest

Fest 19 didn’t happen in 2020 and for both a good and terrible reason - Covid 19. The good folks of Fest did put together an incredible weekend of livestreams by a ton of bands that would’ve played the real world Fest and they called it “The Fest That Never Was”. I caught a bunch of those livestreams and it helped my mental state considerably. Well, I wanted to send a love letter to you, the listener of the Bobcast and to Fest. Here it is. A few of the bands I wouldn’t have missed at Fest 19 and also bands that I love dearly. Wolf-Face, NOMORE, Get Married, Danger Inc., Worriers and War On Women. Two songs each. Fest - I miss you, I love you and I will see you next year. Here’s a track listing -

Wolf-Face - With Or Without Boof & Wolf Like Me

NOMORE - Stars In Motion & Leaving

Get Married - Astrozombies & Skulls

Danger Inc. - Low Battery Summer & Three Small Words

Worriers - Big Feelings & WTF Is Sleep

War On Women - White Lies & Seeds

Episode 78 - Halloween Special with Paranormal Investigator Katie Burr

Happy Halloween and Happy Hauntings! Welcome to the second annual Bobtober Halloween Special! We’re not talking directly about Halloween in this one, we’re delving into regions beyond for this final Bobtober episode. Katie Burr is the subject and paranormal investigating is her specialty. Katie has seen and experienced things that would make lesser people give in and give up, but not Katie. She handles the hurdles of hauntings with grace, a sturdy mind and determination to delve into the secrets of the spectral world more than ever. One of the aspects of this interview that makes it so special and perfect for a Halloween Special? The interview took place at El Adobe De Capistrano, a supposedly VERY haunted location in San Juan Capistrano, California. In the former jail, now a wine cellar. The most haunted location in the building. Yes. Did the happy haunts receive our sympathetic vibrations and materialize? Listen and find out. Featuring songs by Alexisonfire and Thursday and brought to you by Discount Cemetery. Here are some links and legal stuff.

Episode 77 - Nathan Ballingrud Interview

Walking through my local Barnes And Noble a while back, I ran into a book titled “Wounds”. Interesting. The subtitle? “Six Stories From The Border Of Hell”. SOLD! After devilishly devouring the book, I got my hands on Nathan Ballingrud’s first story collection, “North American Lake Monsters”. I’m telling you, these two books have enriched my life immeasurably, with stories of Hell, Werewolves, Vampires, Aliens, but mostly, people. The people in Nathan’s stories come alive in my mind and refuse to leave, long after the reading is done, THAT’S the true sign of a great author, in my mind. Insidious. Here is my attempt to delve the depths of one of my favorite authors mind. How do the stories go from brain to book? IS humanity insignifigant, as Lovecraft would have us believe? What records would you take on your exile to a desert island? All of these questions and more are answered in this episode, plus you’ll get to know Nathan a bit better than you did before. Keep your eye on this dude - he’s going places, and rightfully so. The music of the episode is the perfect companion to the episode, you might say a “Hellish Hymnal” to guide you on this journey. Black Breath is the band and balefully beautiful songs are their game. Pop the iron cage on thine head, ignore the cries of the damned - or - revel in them and join me in this decsent into madness, mayhem and the mind of the best damn horror writer of our time. Episode 76 - Petrifying Poetry and Malevolent Metal

Good evening! Welcome to poetry night, Bobtober style. Prepare to be petrified with fear, as I read selected works of putrid poetry from Edgar Allen Poe, Emiliy Dickinson, HP Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard. Six poems in all await you, all sinister, all spookily spectacular. Here they are, in order of appearance -

“Dead Man’s Hate” by Robert E. Howard

“Halowe’en In A Suburb” by HP Lovecraft

“Because I Could Not Stop For Death” and “I Felt A Funeral, In My Brain” by Emily Dickinson

“The Haunted Palace” and “The Raven” by Edgar Allen Poe.

Writhing in between the phantasmal poems are four songs by Sao Paulo, Brazil’s Goddess’ Of Gore, Nervosa. The songs are (also in order of appearance) “Horrordome”, “Vultures”, “Kill The Silence” and a BRAND NEW SONG, “Guided By Evil”. Join me for these repulsive recreations - if you dare. Episode 74 - Halloween Horror Trivia

Bobtober continues with a trivia contest you can REALLY SINK YOUR TEETH INTO! Yes, Vampire and Witch/Witchcraft movie and TV show trivia, just in time for Halloween. The good folks of the “This Podcast Is Haunted” podcast joined me recently for questions about Dracula, The Craft, The VVitch and more! Cate, Jen and Danny put a stake through the heart of these questions and that was no easy task. How will you measure up? Stoke the fire under your cauldron and see what comes boiling out of the pot, maybe you’ll learn a thing or two? The music of the episode only comes out at night in the form of the two vampire songs - “(She’s My) Vampire Girl” by the Groovie Ghoulies and “Vampire Girl Prefers Me Alive” by J Church. Oi Polloi shares my feelings with the song “Don’t Burn The Witch, Burn The Rich” and War On Women makes an appearance with a BRAND NEW SONG off their forthcoming record, “Wonderful Hell”, which is also the title of the song!
