Episode 107 - The Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark Episode

Have you read any of the “Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark” series of books? As a kid? As an adult? Both? . These books, the Scary Stories series, made a HUGE impression on me when I read them a couple of years ago, as an adult. The artwork is terrifying and amazing. The stories are timeless and creepy, sometimes funny, sometimes disgusting. Always entertaining and fun, that’s the trick of these stories. They grab you and won’t let go. Just like some of the baddies in the stories? Oh, but the art, that’s the REAL kicker, isn’t it? The art in the Scary Stories books worms it’s way into your brain and takes up permanent residence. The original art by Stephen Gammell, that is. Sinister and creepy to the point you feel the art could jump out of the pages and say “YOU HAVE IT!!!”. Here’s what you’ll get in this episode - An in-depth look at Alvin Schwartz and Stephen Gammell. Three stories, one from each book, are dissected and analized. There’s a dramatic retelling of “The Hook”, as it was told to me, when I was a kid in the 1980’s. Then, in the final chapter of the episode, a brief look at the controversy that has plagued this book series for years and years. The Celluloid Catacombs with Carolyn Mauricette pops in to talk about the “Scary Stories…” movie adaption and some fiends of The Bobcast stop by to tell us how the Scary Stories have affected them over the years. Music of the episode by Vudu Sister, who are amazing and will delight you with their spooky sounds. Here are some links!

Episode 103 - Paranormal Ponderings Part II with Maria Wessenauer

The Paranormal Ponderings series continues with Part II, this time it’s all about haunted places and horrifying history! More creepy history than horrifying, I suppose? As with all of the “Paranormal Ponderings” episodes, I brought in an expert to discuss the subject of the episode. Haunted Places? Creepy History? Maria Wessenauer of Hollywood Exhumed has the facts, the details and the experiences that fill in all the blanks with this one! Maria has such a wealth of knowledge about the morbid history of the Los Angeles area, I believe her knowledge could fill an encyclopedia - a creepy compendium, if you will. Plus she’s had several experiences of strange and possibly paranormal phenomena herself! Music of the episode provided by Liverpool, England’s finest fiends, Zombina And The Skeletones. Plus! Ivy Boyd drops by with another edition of her “Mysterious Musings” series for the Bobcast, with some tales of terror from the Rosenheim Mansion in Los Angeles. Turn on the lights and turn up the volume, it’s time to get paranormal. Here are some links!

Episode 88 - Best Of 2020

A “Year In Review” for a year like 2020 was a rough thing to sort out. 2020 sucked. No denying that, right? Well, at least on the Bobcast, 2020 was a great year. Starting out with the conclusion of the Danzig Trilogy and ending with the Paul Tremblay interview, mix in a ton of incredible songs by incredible bands, I can’t complain about 2020 from the podcast point of view. Here’s what you’re getting in this fun-filled episode - Excerpts from the Danzig Series conclusion, the Joe Wood interview, the James Baldwin episode, the Katie Burr interview and the Paul Tremblay interview. A ghost story by Gared O’Donnell of Planes Mistaken For Stars from the very first Bobcast “Ghost Stories” episode. Songs by Lost Avenue, Sarchasm, Le Saboteur, The Bollweevils, Dillinger Four, Get Married and The Hybrids. Sense Field closes this “Best Of…” episode out with a cover of the song “Happy Christmas (War Is Over”. Happy New Year and here’s to a MUCH better year in 2021.

Episode 84 - HP Lovecraft Was A Proud Boy

HP Lovecraft was undoubtedly one of 20th century fiction’s greatest writers. He invented horror fiction as we know it today, I believe. Cosmic, undulating, gasping for breath tales of terror that will keep the bravest soul awake at night. Lovecraft was also an unabashed racist, xenophobe and weird nationalist. This episode covers the history of HP Lovecraft, from birth to death, plus the incredibly lousy views he held on race, immigrants and white power/nationalist nonsense. HP Lovecraft was the early 20th century version of a “proud boy”. Timely, I know. Music of the episode by The Darkest Of The Hillside Thickets, the world’s greatest Lovecraft-inspired band.

Episode 81 - Haunted Arkansas

Let’s go to Northern Arkansas! I bet you don’t hear that very often, do you? Well. The Northern regions of Arkansas, especially the Northwest and North Central regions, are gorgeous. Green, mountain-y, rivers, lakes, outdoor activities to the end of time. What lurks INSIDE of Northern Arkansas, certain places that are located in Northern Arkansas? Ghosts. Spirits. Phantasms galore. This part of the country is so goshdanged haunted, it’s ridiculous. We’ll visit Cotter Bridge, with a little descriptive history and a completely made-up short story by yours truly. The ghosts around Cotter Bridge are real, ohhh yes they are. Next is Mountain Village 1890, located in Bull Shoals of North Central Arkansas. Colonel Jordan of the Confederate Loser Association of 1865 and his former home are the subject of this segment, featuring my personal experiences with him. Finally, we make a stop at the Crescent Hotel of lovely Eureka Springs, the most haunted hotel in the USA. Ghosts in the basement? THE MORGUE? Indeed. Here we go, let’s get HAUNTED. Music of the episode provided by those Minstrels of the Macabre, Murder By Death. So perfect. Here are some links and some legal stuff.

This one utilizes a couple of European fiddle settings from Quantum Ra. It's somewhat inspired by the music from an area in Northrend of World of Warcraft. There's a very relaxing duet of rustic fiddles that plays in the background in that area, so I wanted to play around with those sounds and this is what I came up with.

Let me know what you think. :)

Episode 69 - Labor Day Special - The history of Labor Day and more

Happy Labor Day! Ever wonder why we have a Labor Day holiday in the USA and Canada? Wonder no more, here is the answer! I’ll cover the history behind Labor Day, a little of the history of the American Labor Movement and a bit about the rise and fall of Labor Unions in the USA up to current times. Hint - rich folks hate unions, because of course they do. Most rich folks throughout history seem to have issues with the people that made them rich, right? Let me talk to you about that and more in this episode! Songs are by Arthur Bell, Billy Liar, The Drowns and Chixdiggit. Yes, the songs are all about work. Bonus! The story and some thoughts of the folklore hero John Henry are also in this episode. Take it easy, crack open a cold one and let ME do all the work for a little bit. Here are some links!

Episode 66 - Screamin' Jay Hawkins

Jalacy J. Hawkins, better known as Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, was one of a kind. His voice? Have you ever heard a volcano sing in the middle of a tsunami, while frogs were raining down from the sky? That’s close to the strange, powerful and goddamn charming beauty of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins and that magic voice of his. He’d pop out of a coffin, sing a song about not being able to poop, strutting about the stage with a skull on a stick smoking a cigarette. If you think that last sentence was strange, wait until you hear the story of how “I Put A Spell On You” was recorded! That story is included in this episode, by the way. A brief history of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins from birth to death, the stories behind a couple of his more well known songs and more! The music of the bands in this episode brings something special - a shock-rock connection via Alice Cooper covers, that’s Sloppy Seconds and BL’AST. Episode 63 - Freedom Summer Of 1964 And Voting Rights In The American South

Freedom Summer was a voting rights movement that happened in Mississippi in the summer of 1964. What makes Freedom Summer so important? Freedom Summer really brought the plight of Black Americans to the front of the national conversation at that time. Three men were murdered by the KKK during Freedom Summer, simply because they were helping Black residents of Mississippi attempt to register to vote, among other things. This episode also covers, in a very condenssed way, the history of the rights of Black citizens of the United States to vote, from the end of the Civil War until current times (2020). Voter supression has been an issue for Black Americans for so long and continues to this day. Let’s talk about it, think of ways we can fix this and VOTE the bastards that maintain voter suppression OUT! Music in this episode by Charles Bradley and The BellRays. Here are some links!

Episode 60 - State Of The Union with Bob or ALL COUNTRIES MATTER

A “State Of The Union” thing usually involves the US President talking about their accomplishments and how awesome they are at their job. Psssshhh. Let me throw down the gauntlet and get into the ring for a minute and tell you how things are REALLY going. And no, I’m not some Alex Jones dipshit talking about eating liberal’s body parts. Though, I do talk about eating the rich a little in this one. Hmm. I’ll just say I’m here to remind you that “ALL COUNTRIES MATTER” on this July 4th special episode. Things are pretty messed up in the USA right now, but real change is coming, I can feel it. Good stuff, not the usual dystopian Trump-era shit we’re used to at this point. We’ll also celebrate this ALL COUNTRIES MATTER day with songs by The Adolescents, Pinata Protest, Doc Hammer, Bad Cop/Bad Cop, Dillinger Four and The Arrivals. Episode 57 - James Baldwin

James Baldwin was one of the most important authors, no, one of the most important human beings in the history of 20th century America. A civil rights movement activist who didn’t see himself as an activist. A man who fled the persecution and racism of the United States, only to come back over and over again because he could not stay silent about the horrors inflicted on Black Americans. He was a black man and a gay man, living during a period when both were shunned and persecuted by the country in which he was born and in which he was deeply invested. This episode contains a short history of Mr. James Baldwin, plus his 1963 speech, “The Free And The Brave”. Music is by The Bollweevils, Kira Jari and Danny Denial. PSA’s of the episode are from The National Black Theatre and Showing Up For Racial Justice. Please listen with an open heart and mind, you may learn something, like I did making the episode.
